A herd of wild elephants entered Old Aree village in Wokha district late on the night of July 26, leaving a trail of destruction as they trampled through agricultural fields and tore down temporary huts.
Villagers could not determine the exact number of elephants, but described the damage as severe. For a community that relies entirely on farming for survival, the loss of crops has dealt a heavy blow. Many residents now find themselves uncertain about how they will sustain their families in the coming days.
Aside from the economic impact, the villagers also raised concerns about their safety. They shared that elephant sightings have become more frequent in recent months, creating a sense of fear and vulnerability in the area.
The matter has been reported to the local authorities. Residents are calling for immediate intervention and long-term solutions to prevent such incidents from recurring. They stressed that this is not the first time elephants have entered the village, and urged the administration to take the growing threat seriously.
