The Wildlife Division Dimapur, in collaboration with the Wokha Forest Division, Doyang Plantation Division, and Eco-Warriors, conducted the Wildlife Week Celebration 2024 under the theme “Wildlife Conservation Through Co-Existence.” The event took place on October 5 at the Community Hall in Forest Colony, Wokha.
In his address, Suman W. M. Sivachar (IFS), DFO of the Wokha Forest Division and Doyang Plantation Division, spoke about the challenges faced by wildlife, particularly elephants. He emphasised the importance of understanding animal perspectives and the necessity of conservation, reminding attendees of the significant yet dwindling presence of wildlife in our ecosystem.
Tokaho Kinimi (IFS), Wildlife Warden of the Wildlife Division, Dimapur, reflected on the week-long celebration of wildlife conservation held annually from October 2 to 8. He commended the remarkable participation of school students in various competitions, noting the depth of knowledge demonstrated in their essays and artwork.
Kinimi highlighted on the vital role of wildlife in maintaining ecological balance and urged the youth to embrace their responsibility as future leaders in conservation efforts. He reiterated that the survival of wildlife depends on collective action and co-existence, highlighting the interconnectedness of human and wildlife needs.
Highlights of the celebration included the distribution of prizes for a painting competition, a documentary screening, and a quiz conducted by Eco-Warriors.
The programme was chaired by Km Abeno Ovung, Planning and Livelihood Expert, NFMP, invocation by Mhonchumo Lotha, retired office peon, vote of thanks by Km Grace Kikon, RFO of Wokha Range, acknowledging the contributions of all participants and the importance of ongoing commitment to wildlife conservation.
