As part of the Fire Service Week 2025 observance, the Wokha Fire and Emergency Services organised a week-long programme focused on commemorating fallen firefighters and promoting fire safety awareness among the public. The awareness campaign, which commenced on 14 April, concluded today with a live demonstration at APMC, Wokha Village, under the theme “Unite to Ignite, a Fire Safe India.”

The initiative aimed  to pay tribute to firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty and also to sensitise the local community on the importance of adopting fire safety measures in everyday life.

Speaking with the public, Thenuosielie Pielie, 2nd Officer-in-Charge of Fire and Emergency Services, Wokha, outlined the objectives of the event. He detailed key preventive measures against common fire hazards, including those related to Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), kitchen accidents, and electrical faults.

Pielie advised the public to ensure LPG cylinders are stored upright, away from heat and direct sunlight, and to always check for intact safety caps and seals. He highlighted the importance of timely maintenance, such as replacing rubber tubes every six months and ensuring proper ventilation while using gas appliances.

Speaking on kitchen safety, he stressed the dangers of unattended cooking and overheating oil. He reminded residents that water should never be used to extinguish grease fires and emphasised the value of keeping fire extinguishers nearby. On electrical safety, the public was cautioned against overloading sockets, using substandard equipment, and attempting repairs without proper qualifications.

Pielie recommended the use of certified protective devices such as MCBs and fuses, and advised routine inspection of household wiring. Further, the awareness campaign addressed structural fire safety and emergency planning. Residents were encouraged to install hydrants, alarms, and fire detectors, while building owners were urged to maintain clear evacuation routes and consult authorised experts for fire safety system installations.

The highlight of the final day was a practical demonstration by the Fire and Emergency Services team. The session included fire suppression techniques, first aid response, and safe methods to evacuate or carry injured individuals. Attendees also received hands-on training in operating fire extinguishers and responding to emergency situations.
