Y. Vungthungo Lotha, Senior Principal of Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS) Wokha, was recently selected to represent Nagaland at the National School Leadership Conference. The Principal from Wokha was among the 57 selected participants who presented a case study highlighting the impact of innovative leadership practices in schools. His case study focused on a unique initiative at his school aimed at fostering motivation and discipline among both students and teachers.

Organised by the National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration (NIPA) under the initiative of the National Centre for School Leadership (NCSL), the conference was held in New Delhi from January 8 to 10, 2025 under the theme, “Successful School Leadership 2025: Exemplars of Change and Innovation.”

“I am truly grateful for the opportunity to represent Nagaland. Without the support of the government, I would not have been able to attend such a prestigious event,” said Lotha who also acknowledged the leadership of Dr. Kekhrie, Advisor for School Education,  Kevileno Angami, Commissioner and Secretary of School Education, and Temsunaro Aier, State Mission Director for Samagra Shiksha, for their efforts in transforming the education system in the state.

Speaking to mediapersons, Lotha mentioned that the three-day conference converged educators, scholars, and leaders from across the country to share insights and discuss innovative approaches to school leadership.

Lotha’s initiative included the introduction of a monthly “Student of the Month” award to recognise the most regular and attentive student, and an annual award ceremony for teachers to acknowledge outstanding performance. The awards are presented during the school’s morning assembly and in an annual ceremony that invites local dignitaries, intellectuals, and community leaders to celebrate the achievements of both students and teachers.

“These initiatives have had a tremendous impact. The regularity of students has greatly improved, and teachers have become more disciplined and competitive, which has positively affected both their participation in academic activities and their commitment to vocational education,” state Lotha.

Lotha also highlighted the essence of NIPA which serves as a key think tank for educational policy in India, advising both the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance on important decisions regarding the future of the country’s education system. ”Participating in this conference has been a dream come true for me. The experience has enriched my understanding of school leadership and has motivated me to continue improving the education system in Wokha,” remarked Lotha.
