A mudslide occurred at Saron Colony, Ward 15, Wokha town, around 1 a.m. on September 24 following several days of continuous rainfall. The incident, caused by water overflow from a nearby river, stranded a Tuensang-bound night bus and submerged an Alto car parked along the highway.
Residents said the problem stems from the absence of a proper culvert and slab. They stated that while two ring pipes had been installed by the concerned department, the pipes are unable to withstand heavy water flow and frequently get clogged, forcing water to spill over onto the road. This year alone, similar incidents have already been reported twice.
Wobemo Ezung, Chairman of Saron Colony, said the colony has been appealing to the district administration and highway authorities for over four years but no action has been taken. He said the situation has created hardships for students and daily commuters and warned that if no steps are taken, residents may resort to blocking the road. He added that by “God’s grace” no casualties have been reported so far.
The colony members have demanded the removal of the existing ring pipes and construction of a proper slab culvert to prevent recurring blockages and hazards.

Supporting the demand, Samuel Ezung, Chairman of Niropen Colony and President of the Wokha Town Colonies Union, said the problem is recurring every monsoon season. “This year it has already happened twice. The highway stretch from Saron to Niropen Colony is most affected, and commuters face difficulties while colonies step in to assist stranded travellers,” he said.
He further pointed out that many roads in Wokha town have been damaged this monsoon and urged the concerned authorities to prioritise necessary repairs and preventive measures.
