The farmers of Wokha Village safely carried out the essential burning of their fields along Humtsoe and Elumyo Road in Wokha in preparation for the jhum/shifting cultivation on Monday.
The age-old traditional method of cultivation involves clearing small areas of forested land by cutting and burning the vegetation. This process enriches the soil and prepares it for cultivation, allowing farmers to grow a variety of crops.

The burning process was conducted with proper planning and caution. The Wokha Village Council had earlier informed the public of the agricultural event as a precautionary and safety measure.
Jhum cultivation/ shifting cultivation/ Slash and burn cultivation is still widely practiced in Nagaland. It is not just a means to procure food but also bears cultural significance. In Wokha Village, the burning of the forest land involved the whole community, showcasing close relationship within the villagers and the land, and with commitment to preserving traditional farming practices.
