A workshop focusing on Electric Vehicles (EVs) was organised today by the Khelhoshe Polytechnic, Atoizu, Zunheboto, in association with International Institute of Energy Conservation (IIEC), Delhi.
Resource Person Aishwarya Sharma, Consultant (Emobility), IIEC, outlined the workshop’s objective which were – to enhance awareness about emerging technologies within the transportation sector, particularly the adoption of electric vehicles in India.
She highlighted various key policies and goals, particularly noting the progress made by different states in EV adoption, with specific reference to Nagaland and the Northeast region. The workshop aimed to involve students in understanding the mechanics of EVs, battery systems, and communication technologies, while also addressing the challenges related to their widespread adoption. Sharma encouraged engineering students to develop innovative solutions to further promote EV usage in the state and across the nation.
While acknowledging that electric vehicles are not a novel concept, the Consultant at IIEC pointed out that their commercialisation has accelerated in recent years. She provided a global overview, indicating that China, the United States, and Europe are at the forefront of EV adoption, with over 50% of their vehicles now electrified. She emphasised the importance of learning from these regions, particularly in areas such as charging infrastructure and governmental incentives for EV utilisation.
The environmental advantages of EVs were also discussed, particularly their role in mitigating air pollution and reducing dependency on imported fossil fuels and highlighted the significant cost savings associated with operating electric vehicles compared to traditional petrol and diesel vehicles, advocating for a shift towards cleaner transportation solutions.
In his welcome address, Principal Er. Neisekho Chaya expressed gratitude for the opportunity to learn from an esteemed expert in the field. He noted the challenges faced in securing knowledgeable resource persons for institutions in remote areas like Nagaland and appreciated the resource person readiness to participate. He underscored the importance of collaboration in gaining new insights, highlighting the urgency of exploring renewable energy alternatives in light of dwindling fossil fuel supplies. Looking to the future, the Principal shared aspirations for establishing an electric vehicle laboratory at the institute, reinforcing the commitment to advancing knowledge and technology in this crucial sector.
The event concluded with a lively Q&A session, allowing students to engage directly with Sharma to enhance their understanding of electric vehicles.
The workshop was chaired by Er. Jenibemo while Er. Neisekho Chaya delivered the welcome address and Er. Ruokuobeilie Mere, Head of the Department of Automobile Engineering gave the vote of thanks.
