BY | Sunday, 6 October, 2024

World Cerebral Palsy Day is celebrated annually on 6th October, 2024 to bring together people living with cerebral palsy, their families, supporters and organisations from over 100 countries. This year the movement is celebrated under the theme, #UniquelyCP.

Cerebral palsy is a physical disability that affects movement and posture. Many people with cerebral palsy have other related vision, hearing, communication and mobility needs. Its impact can range from a weakness in one hand, to almost a complete lack of voluntary movement. It is a complex disability whereby;

1) 1 in 4 children with cerebral palsy cannot talk

2) 1 in 4 cannot walk

3) 1 in 2 have an intellectual disability

4) 1 in 4 have epilepsy.

The movement was formed in the 2012 with the aim to foster an environment where individuals with cerebral palsy have equal rights and access to equal opportunities without any form of discrimination. In the passing year, the global movement reached over 10 million people.
