World Environment Day was observed at Wokha Village, Old Riphyim Village and Airfield Colony in Wokha Town on 5th June 2024 with the theme “Land Restoration, Desertification and Drought Resilience”. Cleanliness drives, Plantation and camping programmes were organised to commemorate the significant day.
In Wokha Village, the Joint Forest Management Committee (JFMC) Wokha Village held an event with K. Vandan Erui, Chairman, Wokha Village Council, as the theme speaker. Erui expressed concern over the world’s ecosystem and shared the fear that one day the fertile land may become desert due to the recklessness of human beings.
He encouraged the gathering to practice terrace cultivation with proper water irrigation and use of the same land every season which will minimize the use of land and in return help the preserve fertility of the land and reduce risks of desertification. Further, Erui advised planting more trees at the reserved forest of Mt. Tiyi to help restore the ecology of Wokha Town and enhance the underground water generation.
