A programme on the theme “Healthy timing and Spacing of Programme of Mothers and Child” was conducted on Monday at the Chief Medical Office, Noklak to mark World Population Fortnight.
Speaking at the event, Dr Victor NC, Chief Medical Officer, Noklak explained that World Population Day is not about pregnancy control, rather it is about quality family planning. Emphasizing the importance of birth spacing for mothers, he stressed on the effects of unplanned pregnancies which can lead to health complications or even maternal death and lack of nutritions to the new born baby.
The CMO mentioned that a mother must have minimum of two years gap for pregnancy to maintain healthy life. Stating that 52.2% of pregnant mothers are anaemic, he stressed on the importance of taking immunization of both the mother and child. Dr Victor also stressed on the responsibility of the ASHAS to spread awareness.
Deputy Commissioner, Noklak, Arikumba mentioned that poor economy is one of the main reasons for the uncontrolled rise in population. Highlighting its ill effects, he urged the apex societies of Noklak district to sentitise all, especially those in the rural areas, on family planning and population control.
Earlier, the program was chaired by C. Hosea NS Lam while invocation was pronounced by Keshe, Vice President, Khiamniungan Menyiu Hoikam (Khiamniungan Women Organisation).
