World Wetlands Day 2025 celebrated in Wokha

The Wokha Forest Division, the Doyang Division Plantation, the Nagaland Forest Management Project and the German Development Bank (KfW) along with Eco-warriors Nagaland celebrated World Wetlands Day 2025 at Vivekananda Kendra Vidyalaya School, Doyang on 1st February on the theme “Protecting Wetlands for our Common Future”.

The program started with power point presentations on awareness of wetland with the students of VKV Doyang. During the session Chumdemo Tsanglao, Eco-warriors shared an awareness regarding the importance of wetlands and how conservation is very important, among the students.

Earlier, Rhontsuthung L Odyuo, Eco Warriors gave the welcome address and informative speech on the importance of wetlands at the start of the event. During the programme various activities were also conducted like Quiz, Drawing Competitions and Cleanliness Drive around the school. A total number of 226 students and 30 staff members participated in the event, the Wokha Forest Division informed in a press release.

Similarly, World Wetlands Day 2025 was observed at Mekokla Village, Wokha on 1st February in view of the Akuk-Mekokla complex wetland.

Addressing the event, Mhathung Lucas Humtsoe, Capacity Building, IEC & Documentation Expert, Divisional Management Unit, Wokha, NFMP, highlighted the importance of Wetlands and its impact on environment. He stressed the crucial role that wetlands help in biodiversity conservation, ground water recharge, filtration of water from pollution and protection against erosion.  Humtsoe further emphasised on conservation of soft-shell turtle and encouraged the Village council to implement a strict rule for protecting the endangered species.

The event saw 50 Participants from Akuk Village – Eco Development committee (EDC), Mekokla Village Council, Mekokla Village students, Mekokla Eloe Hoho, Mekokla SHGs, GB and well-wishers.
