In a significant step towards addressing substance abuse in Wokha district, Deputy Chief Minister, Yanthungo Patton inaugurated the District De-Addiction Centre (DDAC) at Chukitong Town, Wokha, on 21st June 2025. The centre, established through the collaborative efforts of Bethesda Youth Welfare Centre, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (Government of India), the Department of Social Welfare (Government of Nagaland), and the Wokha District Administration, aims to provide structured rehabilitation and recovery services to those battling addiction.
Speaking as the special guest, Deputy Chief Minister urged the people of Wokha to collectively combat the growing menace of drug abuse. He cited the example of Bhandari, a sub-division bordering neighbouring states, which he described as a transit point that has inadvertently contributed to the increased inflow of narcotics and alcohol. Referencing a recent national report, he expressed concern over Nagaland ranking among the top states for HIV prevalence – second only to Mizoram and underlined the urgency to act decisively.
Patton commended the vision of local leaders and stakeholders for initiating the DDAC and expressed hope that the centre would become a cornerstone for recovery, not just another institution. “Rather than establishing multiple centres, let this one be effective enough to bring about visible change in reducing drug dependency,” he said.
He also reflected on Chukitong Town’s legacy as an educational hub for the Lotha community and encouraged it to continue playing a transformative role in society. Expressing concern over the declining number of farmers in the district despite agriculture being a key economic driver, Patton encouraged a renewed focus on farming, local entrepreneurship, and self-reliance for strengthening human capital development at Wokha.
Church leaders, he added, have an essential role to play in community healing and moral guidance, particularly among youth.
