Yimkhiung and Pungro CSOs issues public ultimatum to NSCN (IM) demanding termination of cadres following physical assault

Civil society organisations of the Yimkhiung community and Pungro sub-division has submitted a public ultimatum to the Yaruiwo of GPRN/NSCN (IM) demanding the termination of its two cadres within 72 hours.

The demand comes in the backdrop of physical assault against two persons from GPRN/NSCN (Kitovi) group belonging to Yimkhiung community, allegedly by two NSCN (IM) cadres. The organisations expressed disappointment over the physical assaulted meted to its natives amidst the community’s celebration of the Metümnyo festival

An emergency meeting was held with the representatives from the Yimkhiung Tribal Council (YTC), Public Forum Pungro Sub-Division (PFPSD), Yimkhiung Youth Organization (YYO), Yimkhiung Akherü Arihako (YAA), Yimkhiung Liberü Arihako (YLA), GBs Union Pungro Sub-Division, Pungro Town GBs, Pungro Area College Students’ Union (PACSU), Pungro Town Students’ Union (PTSU) and all the Ward Chairmen and Secretaries of Pungro town, regarding the incident involving two members of the GPRN/NSCN (kitovi) group. According to the public ultimatum, the individuals were mercilessly assaulted on August 8 by the Town Commander of GPRN/NSCN-IM and his accomplice at Pungro Town.

“On 8th August 2024, at approximately 8:00 PM, Mr. Sangtikiu and Mr. Ati of the GPRN/NSCN (Ketovi) group belonging to Yimkhiung community was brutally beaten with rifle butts and cane sticks at gunpoint, where any differences and issues could be solved humanly and without any physical assault. Consequently upon the hearing of the commotions, when the neighbour attempted to intervene, they were also threatened with guns and warned not to spread the information about the incident,” stated the letter.

Upon learning of the situation, CSO leaders contacted the commander to negotiate but were met with threats and responded with disregard by the Town Commander.

“The incident occurred while the public was joyously celebrating the Metümnyo festival, which demonstrates a blatant disrespect to the Yimkhiung Tribal festival. It is also pertinent to state that the so called Capt. Jangkhen has been involved in threatening the students’ leader, individuals and business establishments where by creating social disorder and undermining the efforts of peace and unity of the area and town in particular. Furthermore, the action of the Town Commander, so called Capt, Jangkhen are in direct violation of the ENPO resolution of December 18, 2007, which strongly opposes bloodshed, threats, intimidation and violence within the ENPO jurisdiction,” informed the organisations.

In the light of the ensuing incidents, the organisations on behalf of the Pungro Sub-Division public and Yimkhiung in general, submitted the public ultimatum demanding immediate action:

1. The immediate termination of Capt. Jangkhen and Sgt. Major Jusulen from national service within 72 hours of issuing this Public Ultimatum.

2. Non-compliance with the Public Demand within the given timeframe will result into the people of entire Yimkhiung to take up its own course of action.
