Young Naga Club, Ungma, Mokokchung District observed World Environment Day 2024 as part of its Golden Jubilee celebrations under the theme “Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience”. On Wednesday, the Club conducted a Mass Social Work at Ungma Village, cleaned Imkongmeren Sports Complex in Mokokchung and planted 100 tree saplings around Ungma Village.
The Club said that its objective behind today’s initiatives is to promote the sustainable traditional practices in the modern way of living. “Our methods, honed over centuries of living in harmony with nature, offer valuable lessons for us today as we grapple with the ecological crisis. We Nagas have a deep understanding of our local ecosystems and how to use resources responsibly”, they stated.
The Young Naga Club mentioned that they intend to start from the grassroot level by planting fruit trees in and around Ungma Village and more specifically in areas where these trees will be nurtured and taken care of. They are also emphasising on reducing waste by reusing or repurpose items, compost food scraps, and avoid unnecessary consumption.

Further, the Club is also involved in the promotion of usage of locally available materials for building, tools, and crafts. “This will reduce our dependence on extractive industries and transportation, which can have a significant environmental impact,” they added.
In commemoration of the Club’s 50th year jubilee, YNC aims to contribute to alleviating the ongoing ecological crisis with the motto “To Renew, Recycle, Reuse”.
They informed that as a self-governed club, it has not partnered or collaborated with other organizations, communities, or experts for their programmes. Young Naga Club, Ungma did mention that they do receive tree saplings from the Department of Agriculture which are used purposefully.
