A Youth Adventure Programme and Rural Sports event was organised by the Department of Youth Resources and Sports (YRS), Government of Nagaland, from 31st October to 3rd November at Shilloi Lake, Phek District.
The event was held under the Innovative Programme 2022-2023 with the aim to promote sports and adventure activities among the youth of rural areas. 36 youths from nine districts, 80 youths from Phokhungri area of Phek District, along with the officials of YRS, NAAME, and the local leaders attended the event in the picturesque location, the department informed.
The participants engaged in various activities such as tent pitching, zip-lining, rescue and survival operation, hiking, eco-tourism, camping and two days of Rural Sports. The event also included a visit to Avakhung Village at the Indo-Myanmar border.
Kethosituo Sekhose, NCS, Director of Youth Resources and Sports, welcomed the participants to the inaugural Youth Adventure Programme where he highlighted the significance of the event for the youth of the state. He also emphasized on the importance of tourism for the development of the area and further drew attention to the various schemes available for the youth.
The President of Phokhungri Area Sports Organisation (PASO), Ashelo, appreciated the initiative of YRS and expressed his gratitude for the jerseys and cash prizes for the teams. He also urged everyone to spread the word about the scenic beauty of Shilloi Lake.

Nyusietho Nyuthe, Advisor for New and Renewable Energy, Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority, who graced the 1st Rural Sports under Innovative Programme of the State Government, stressed on the importance of education and encouraged the youth to explore various career options. He also advised the people of Phokhungri Area to work together for the development of the area.
The first football match was played between Letsam Team and Zhipu Sporting Club. The event was attended by the officials of YRS, village and community leaders, and the Pastor of Town Baptist Church Phokhungri.
The closing ceremony of the Rural Sports for Football for Phokhungri Area was graced by Albert Ezung, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Meluri, as the special guest. He congratulated the winners and motivated the losing teams to try harder next time. He also appreciated the Youth Resources and Sports Department for organizing such competitive and sporting events in the most remote areas. Ezung also expressed his concern over the lack of development in the area and urged the public and youth to collaborate with the government.
The prize distribution was followed by a thanksgiving prayer by the Pastor of Letsam Village Baptist Church, Yinletsü.
