The Zeliangrong Youth Organization Nagaland (ZYON), in coordination with various Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and its subordinate units, has declared an indefinite shutdown in Peren district starting April 22, protesting the prolonged delay in justice for the murder of a woman from Mhaikam village.

Addressing the media on April 21, ZYON President R. John Zeliang said the decision to initiate the shutdown comes after repeated appeals to the state government and law enforcement agencies went unanswered. “We gave enough time for the authorities to act. But justice remains elusive, and the community cannot remain silent any longer,” Zeliang stated.

As part of the agitation, ZYON announced a complete closure of government offices and a ban on the movement of government-registered vehicles within the district. The organization clarified that the protest is directed at the state government’s failure to strengthen the justice delivery system, not the police department itself.

“This is not just about one case. It’s about a broken system,” Zeliang emphasized. “Our investigative agencies are under-equipped, and that’s allowing perpetrators to slip through the cracks. We are demanding accountability and structural reform.”

When questioned about the duration of the protest, ZYON made it clear that the shutdown will continue indefinitely until justice is served. “If the government fails to act, it must also take responsibility for any consequences faced by the youth or public during this agitation,” Zeliang warned.

The organization has also called on the public especially residents of Peren district and members of the Zeliangrong community across Nagaland to stand in solidarity. “This fight is not for one individual, but for the safety and dignity of every woman and child in our land,” Zeliang said.

Backing ZYON’s move, Zeliangrong Students’ Union Nagaland (ZSUN) president Adaube Hiekha Hau confirmed that the student body has initiated consultations with its units and reaffirmed its commitment to the cause.
