Deputy Chief Minister in-charge of Home and Border Affairs, Yanthungo Patton on Thursday said that systematic efforts have been undertaken to arrest criminals and disrupt the drug peddling and trafficking networks in the last four months since Director General of Police, Nagaland and Nagaland Police have launched “War on Drugs”.
Speaking to the media fraternity at the Police headquarter in Kohima, Patton highlighted that in furtherance of the Prime Minister and Union Home Minister’s Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, the State Police has registered 101 Cases and arrested 143 Number of criminals from various parts of the Northeast. The arrested persons include 6 police personnel also.
We have also issued preventive detention orders for 7 persons under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PITSNDPS) Act which allows the State Government to put traffickers and peddlers under preventive detention. This has been done to disrupt the trafficking networks. Deterrence and prevention of criminal acts needs parallel attention from the law enforcing agency, he said.
Patton also raised his concerns mentioning that scientific aid to investigation is one crucial area of concern for conviction of drugs traffickers, the department felt the need to upgrade and update the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) Unit. Towards this, he said the Police department must come up with tangible proposal and suggestion and assured the State Government’s commitment to extend all possible help in this major concern.
Meanwhile, the State Police has set up an Anti-Narcotics Task Force booth at the state level with state-wide jurisdiction and in the districts to focus on this problem, informed Patton.
He also said that the DGP Nagaland has been directed to quickly complete departmental enquiries against the police personnel arrested so far so that it sends a message of zero tolerance in the society.
“I have also asked DGP to carry out screening of Police personnel having issue of substance abuse in the department so that suitable disciplinary and if deemed fit, criminal actions will be taken against them,” the Home Minister informed.
