198 Indian athletes to compete in Special Olympics World Games Berlin 2023

New Delhi: Over 7000 athletes from 190 countries will be competing in the Games in Berlin

198 athletes from India will be competing in 16 different sports disciplines at the Special Olympics World Games Berlin 2023 which will be held from 17-25 June at Berlin, Germany.

The Indian team comprising of 280 members, including the athletes, left for Berlin to compete on 12 June, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports had informed in a statement. Prior to their departure, a send-off ceremony was organised for the team on 8 June where Union Minister of MYAS, Anurag Singh Thakur met them.

The team also had a preparatory coaching camp at Sports Authority of India’s (SAI) Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Delhi to prepare for the world event which will see participation from over 7000 athletes from 190 countries.

MYAS has sanctioned an amount of Rs 7.7 Cr towards the participation of the Indian contingent at the Special Olympics, which is the highest amount sanctioned for the event to date.

The Special Olympics World Games are the most inclusive sports event in the world where thousands of athletes with intellectual disabilities compete. The Games are held every two years.

In Berlin, the athletes will be competing for medals in 26 summer sports.
