22nd LSU Martyrs’ Trophy kicks off in Wokha Town

Wokha: Martyrs’ Trophy is organized every year in memory of Lt. Chumdamo Tungoe and Lt. Thungkhomo Ezung

The 22nd edition of the Lotha Student’s Union (LSU) Martyrs’ Trophy commenced on Tuesday at Public Ground, Wokha Town with Member of Nagaland Legislative Assembly Y M Humtsoe as the Chief Guest.

Humstoe, speaking on the occasion, asserted that he is grateful towards the LSU for taking the initiative and organising the tournament every year in memory of Lt. Chumdamo Tungoe and Lt. Thungkhomo Ezung.

He reminded the gathering that one should not forget the sacrifice they made while protecting the ancestral rights of the Lothas and Nagas in general. Humtsoe also encouraged the students for more participation whenever the trophy is conducted.

Further, the MLA exhorted the youth stating that sports is also a profession and urged enthusiasts to be dedicated and work hard on their skills and talents if they wish to pursue it professionally.

The welcome note was delivered by Lirhonthung Kithan, president, LSU. He also spoke briefly about the significance of the tournament followed by short speeches from the martyrs’ families.

The programme was chaired by Thungreni M Lotha, Women Coordinator, LSU while prelude was done by Fernbrook School Wokha.

The Martyrs’ Trophy is organized every year by the Lotha Students’ Union in memory of Lt. Chumdamo Tungoe and Lt. Thungkhomo Ezung who lost their lives on 14 April 1977 in police firing during the silent procession by LSU in protest against the inhuman and barbaric act meted out to the then SDO (Civil) of Ralan, Ngurkhuma Mizo by Assam Police and Assam Forest Guard, while protecting the legal rights of the Lotha Land.
