Four people including a forest guard were killed in a violent clash at Mukroh under Jirikunding police station in West Karbi Anglong district of Assam along the border with Meghalaya.

The incident took place around 3am on Tuesday when a truck carrying timber was asked to stop at a police check post at Mukroh, in West Karbi Anglong. The truck tried to speed away instead of stopping, resulting in a chase by the police, who then fired shots and punctured one of the truck’s tyres.

Following this, three people, including the driver, handyman and another person, were arrested and taken to Jirikunding PS.

SP West Karbi Anglong later asked another team of police to bring back the seized timber laden truck from the location.

On reaching the location the police were attacked by a mob armed with sharp weapons and sticks. The police had to resort to firing in self-defence in which the reported deaths took place, police sources said.

Situation is said to be tense. The SP with reinforcement teams are said have rushed to the location.
