6th Winter Carnival cum Orchid Festival underway at Tepuiki River bank

Peren: Around 600 different varieties of orchids, local to Peren district as well as hybrid, on display

The 6th Edition Winter Carnival cum Orchid Festival 2023 is underway at Carnival Village, Tepuiki River. On 6th December 2023, TR Zeliang, Deputy Chief Minister, Planning & Transformation and National Highway lit the bon fire to mark the opening of the 6th Edition Winter Carnival Mini Millet Festival and stalls while the Orchid Festival was inaugurated by his wife Kevizeno Rangkau. The Carnival will run from 6th to 10th December 2023.

On Thursday, the second day, W Chingang Konyak, Advisor, DUDA, Geology & Mining, graced the event as the Special Guest, overseeing events such as the Volleyball Tournament, Bamboo Rafting Competition, Arm Wrestling Competition, King Chilly Eating Competition, Egg Eating Competition, Orchid Fashion Parade, and Music Fest (Peren Voice Impact Winners).

 

Ngautube Chamlak, Convenor of the Organising Committee, Progressive Peren (P2), highlighted that P2, initiated in 2018, aims to improve lives, promote tourism, and work in collaboration with the government and other agencies. The core values emphasized are “Believe Battle Build” (B3).

Chamlak emphasized Progressive Peren’s belief that citizens, when mobilized, can contribute to their own welfare, leading to more effective and economical solutions for local needs. The organization envisions making Peren the first Tourist Town in the State, incorporating activities such as Kids Carnival, Cultural activities, Christmas Choral Competition, Traditional Games, Exhibition cum sale, Snail/Egg Eating Competitions, Strongman, Ziplining, Half Marathon, Fashion parades, and Musical events.

This year, Progressive Peren (P2) incorporated the “Orchid Festival” as part of the Winter Carnival, aligning with the Tourism Department’s vision to bring the spirit of Hornbill Festival to the district. Around 600 different varieties of orchids, local to Peren district as well as hybrid, are on display.

The collaboration under Progressive Peren (P2) involves seven organizations/NGOs, including TEAM ONE, Peren Town Youth Organisation, Peren Town Women Welfare Organisation, Nringbeting Foundation, Peren District Music Society, The Bridge, and Peren District Beauty Aesthetic Society.

As part of the Winter Carnival, free entry for all girl children was facilitated in collaboration with Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Yojana, Peren District Administration under the Ministry of Women & Child Development.

The event boasts a total of 43 stalls, including seven government department stalls and 36 local stalls. Notably, the festival straddles the jurisdictions of Tampung area in Manipur and Nagaland, leading to the initiation of two Rehangki (Morung) from both states.

Upcoming activities on day three include Marathon Men & Women, Volleyball Tournament, Traditional Tricycle Flag Off, Bamboo Stilt Walk competition, Top spinning competition, Heningna competition, and Music Fest (Open House).

Day four will feature Johnny Ruangmei, Joint Chief Executive Officer, Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) Home Department, overseeing events like Volleyball Tournament, Greased Bamboo Pole Climbing Competition, Snail Eating Competition, and Volleyball Semi Final (Peren Voice Impact Season 8).

Day five, with Vineet Kumar, IAS Deputy Commissioner, Peren, as the Special Guest, will witness Catapult Shooting Competition, Pork Fat Eating Competition, Volleyball Tournament Final Match, and the Culmination of the 2023 Winter Carnival Cum Orchid Festival followed by a Music Fest.
