An 82-year-old woman was allegedly raped by a Nagaland Police personnel in Kiphire town on June 17, triggering shock and outrage among residents.

According to the victim’s family, the elderly woman is currently safe and in stable condition, though she remains deeply traumatised by the incident.

Speaking to the media, the victim’s daughter recounted that she returned home from the market and found her mother attempting to wash a blood-stained bedsheet while trying to cover herself. Alarmed by her condition, she questioned her mother, who allegedly revealed that she had been sexually assaulted by their neighbour, a police personnel.

Following the disclosure, the daughter immediately lodged a First Information Report (FIR) at Kiphire Police Station.

The accused, identified as Heluikie Nsangung, popularly known as Amose, was a neighbour of the victim. Both families lived in rented accommodation in the same building. He is married and has one child, but his wife and child were reportedly away in their village at the time of the incident.

The victim reportedly pleaded with the accused not to assault her, telling him that she regarded him like a son. However, he allegedly ignored her pleas and committed the crime.

The daughter further stated that her mother was bleeding heavily when she first found her. She added that the victim’s condition has since stabilized and she is currently receiving care.

The incident has sparked widespread concern, particularly because of the victim’s advanced age and the fact that the accused is a member of the police force. Family members have demanded swift justice and strict action against the accused.

Police have registered a case and further investigation is underway.

More details are awaited.
