ADC Chozuba imposes total ban on single-use plastics

The Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC)-cum-Executive Officer of the Chozuba Town Council, Zapuno Khatso, NCS, has issued an order enforcing a total ban on various categories of single-use plastic (SUP) items within the Chozuba Town Council jurisdiction and all areas under Chozuba Sub-Division.

The order, issued in accordance with notifications of the Urban Development Department (UDD), will come into force with immediate effect.

According to the notification, the ban covers all single-use plastic items prohibited under various UDD notifications issued between 2018 and 2022.

Under the UDD notification dated June 17, 2019, the banned items include all plastic carry bags, with or without handles, irrespective of thickness or size; plastic cutlery such as plates, cups, forks, spoons and straws; Styrofoam (Thermocol) cutlery and decorative materials; polythene; nylon; Poly Vinyl Chloride (PVC); polypropylene; and polystyrene products.

The order also enforces the UDD notification dated December 6, 2020, prohibiting the use of flex banners, boards and posters by government departments, institutions and agencies during official functions and programmes.

Further, in line with the UDD notification of March 11, 2022, the ban extends to plastic ear buds with plastic sticks, plastic balloon sticks, plastic flags, candy sticks, ice cream sticks, polystyrene (Thermocol) decorative materials, plastic plates, cups, forks, spoons, knives, straws, trays, plastic wrapping or packing films used around sweet boxes, invitation cards and cigarette packets, plastic or PVC banners measuring less than 100 microns in thickness, and plastic stirrers.

The administration has also reiterated the provisions of the UDD notification dated November 29, 2018, imposing a complete ban on the use of packaged drinking water in plastic bottles below 20 litres capacity during meetings, seminars, official functions and for personal consumption.

The ADC directed that the ban be implemented strictly throughout the Chozuba Town Council area and across the entire Chozuba Sub-Division, urging all departments, institutions, commercial establishments and members of the public to comply with the notification in the interest of environmental protection and sustainable waste management.
