The Students’ Placement Cell, School of Agricultural Sciences, Nagaland University (SAS, NU), organized a guest lecture on “Nanoscience and Society” on July 22 at the Library Hall of the campus. The lecture was delivered by Dr CV Yelamaggad, Distinguished Scientist and Professor, Centre for Nano and Soft Matter Sciences (CeNS), Bengaluru, an autonomous institute under the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India.

The programme was chaired by Dr Mary N Odyuo, Students’ Placement Officer, SAS, NU who delivered the welcome address. Prof Dipak Sinha, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Nagaland University, Medziphema Campus welcomed the distinguished speaker and appreciated his presence at the University. He encouraged the participants to actively interact with the speaker and make the best use of the opportunity to learn from his vast expertise on Nanoscience and Nanotechnology.

The lecture, titled “Nanoscience and Society,” introduced students and research scholars to the rapidly evolving field of nanoscience and its transformative role in addressing societal challenges. Dr Yelamaggad explained how materials engineered at the nanoscale possess unique physical and chemical properties that enable innovative applications across healthcare, agriculture, energy, environmental protection, and electronics.

One of the highlights of the lecture was the discussion on metamaterials and their extraordinary ability to manipulate light. Dr Yelamaggad explained the scientific principles behind Negative Refractive Index (NRI) and Epsilon-Near-Zero (ENZ) materials, illustrating how these advanced materials can bend light around an object, thereby reducing its visibility.

Although such technologies are still under active research, the lecture provided fascinating insights into the science of invisibility and its potential applications in communication, defence, imaging, and photonic technologies.

The lecture concluded with an interactive session, during which students and research scholars enthusiastically engaged with the speaker and sought clarification on various aspects of nanoscience and research. The programme was attended by 40 participants, comprising faculty members, research scholars and students.

Dr. Sabbithi Pavan, Assistant Students’ Placement Officer, proposed the vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to the distinguished speaker and all the participants for making the programme a success.
