Teachers across Nagaland were honoured on Teachers’ Day on Saturday, with district administrations, education departments and Assam Rifles recognising their crucial role in shaping young minds, nurturing values and preparing students for the challenges of a rapidly changing world.
In Wokha, the District Education Department celebrated Teachers’ Day at VDB Hall, with Deputy Commissioner K Mhathung Tsanglao as the special guest. Addressing the gathering, Tsanglao described teachers as the “silent architects” of society, saying their influence extends beyond classrooms and helps shape communities.
He highlighted the growing role of technology in education, noting that while digital tools have made learning more accessible, they have also exposed students to large amounts of unverified information. He urged teachers to serve as filters and guides, helping students distinguish authentic knowledge from misinformation.
Emphasising that teaching goes beyond textbooks, the Deputy Commissioner said teachers must guide students towards their future and retain the “human touch” even in an age increasingly influenced by artificial intelligence. He also stressed the importance of teachers extending their role beyond professional responsibilities by contributing to the nurturing and upbringing of children.
Senior SDEO Wokha Nchumbemo Jami delivered the welcome address, while Vice Principal of GHSS Wokha L Mharoni Odyuo spoke on the significance of Teachers’ Day. District Teachers’ Awards were presented to Thungdemo Humtsoe of GHSS Bhandari, L Yanbeni Murry of GMS Wokha Town D, N Longshibeni Ngullie of GPS Saron Wokha and Jennifer Tsanglao of Isiah Ability Higher Secondary School, Wokha. Performances by Libemo Memorial School, Don Bosco Higher Secondary School and GMS Wokha Town D and B added colour to the celebration.
In Longleng, the District Education Office, in collaboration with State Bank of India, Longleng Branch, organised Teachers’ Day at the VDB/VCC Hall. Deputy Commissioner W Manpai Phom attended as the special guest.
Addressing the gathering, Phom said Teachers’ Day was an occasion not only to honour the sacrifices and dedicated service of teachers but also to reflect on the future direction of education. He noted that India observes Teachers’ Day on September 5 to commemorate the birth anniversary of former President and eminent educationist Dr S Radhakrishnan.
Congratulating teachers recognised by the State Government for their exemplary contribution and lifelong service, the Deputy Commissioner said teachers play a pivotal role in shaping children through guidance and mentorship. He urged them to serve as role models and inspire students to follow the right path.

Phom called upon teachers to build a strong foundation for students and discharge their responsibilities with dedication and sincerity, stressing that education is central to the progress of the district and society. He also presented the District Teachers’ Awards to the recipients.
The celebration featured a special number by Vision Val School and “Ode to the Teachers” by Monglem Phom of GMS Pupei Longleng.
In Tuensang, Teachers’ Day was observed at Town Hall with Deputy Commissioner Lithrongla Tongpi Rutsa as the special guest. Organised by the District Education Office, the programme honoured teachers for their dedication and contribution to shaping future generations.
Rutsa said teachers were uniquely placed to understand the struggles and difficulties faced by students and urged them to create a safe and supportive school environment where children could learn with confidence and work towards a successful future.
She encouraged schools to introduce early childhood education to help children develop strong cognitive foundations and social skills from an early age. She also called upon teachers to continuously update their knowledge, particularly in technology, to remain effective in an increasingly computerised world.
The programme included special presentations by GHSS Hakushang, Baptist Thangyen Higher Secondary School, Holy Angel School and Tulip Residency Academy. Teachers were also honoured, while the District Teachers’ Award 2026 was presented during the programme.
In Niuland, the Common Teachers’ Day Programme was held at Aqo Ki, Niuland Town, with Deputy Commissioner TL Kiusumong Tikhir as the special guest.
Addressing teachers and officials from across the district, Tikhir highlighted the indispensable contribution of educators to the development of society. “We are what we are today because of our teachers,” he said, describing teachers as sculptors who shape students and prepare them to contribute to society and nation-building.
The programme brought together members of the teaching community and district officials to recognise and celebrate the vital role played by educators.
Meanwhile, Assam Rifles marked Teachers’ Day with students and teachers in remote parts of Nagaland, using the occasion to honour educators and strengthen ties with local communities.
At GHSS Pungro in Kiphire district, the celebration was attended by 320 students, 28 teachers and staff, and Assam Rifles personnel. Light refreshments and sports items were distributed among the students to encourage participation in sports and promote a healthy and positive environment for their overall development.
In another programme at GMS and Christian School, Anatongre village, students prepared gratitude posters expressing appreciation for their teachers. Stationery items were distributed among the students, while sports equipment was provided to both schools to encourage physical activity and healthy lifestyles.
The Anatongre programme was attended by 85 students and 19 teachers, besides Village Council members, parents and Assam Rifles personnel. The celebrations provided an opportunity for interaction between the security force and the local community, further strengthening bonds of trust, goodwill and cooperation.
