The Councillor of Ward 9, Dimapur Municipal Council, Lanutoshi S Yaden has warned of strict action against indiscriminate dumping of garbage, animal waste and carcasses in public places, following the dumping of dead pig carcasses outside Dimapur Club.

Condemning the incident, Yaden said such practices pose serious concerns to public health, sanitation and environmental hygiene and cannot be allowed to become routine in the community.

In a statement, the councillor appealed to residents, shopkeepers, business establishments, institutions and other users of the area to refrain from using public spaces as dumping grounds. He said the dumping of garbage, animal waste, carcasses, plastic, household refuse or other waste around Dimapur Club and other public spaces in Ward 9 would no longer be tolerated.

Yaden warned that, with immediate effect, anyone found dumping waste in prohibited areas would be liable to fines and other appropriate action under applicable municipal laws and regulations. Where necessary, cases may also be referred to the concerned authorities for further legal action.

He said the warning was directed at all those engaging in habitual dumping and not at any particular individual or group, adding that repeated violations could not continue at the cost of public health, safety and cleanliness.

The councillor also appealed to households and establishments to take responsibility for proper waste disposal and cooperate with the prescribed garbage collection and disposal system.

Colony councils, residents, business establishments and other responsible citizens were urged to remain vigilant and report incidents of illegal dumping to the Ward Councillor’s Office or the nearest police station, wherever appropriate.

Yaden said maintaining a clean Ward 9 required the cooperation and civic responsibility of every citizen, adding that public roads, open spaces and community areas must be treated as shared spaces.
