The National Service Scheme (NSS), Nagaland University, Kohima Campus, in collaboration with the Lions Club Kohima, organised a Tree Plantation Day on October 2 within the university campus as part of the Swachhata Hi Seva 2026 campaign. The programme was conducted under the theme “Ek Ped Ma Ke Naam”, highlighting the importance of environmental conservation and responsible tree plantation.
The programme was graced by Prof N Venuh, Pro Vice Chancellor, Nagaland University, Kohima Campus, as the Special Guest. Addressing the gathering, Prof Venuh reiterated the importance of planting trees to protect the environment and contribute towards a greener and healthier future.
He also emphasised the need for careful selection of tree species, encouraging the plantation of trees that enrich and add value to the soil rather than those that may adversely affect soil quality.
Lion Er Talitemsu Jamir, President, Lions Club of Kohima, expressed his appreciation for the collaboration, describing it as the first collaboration between Nagaland University and Lions Club Kohima. He highlighted the key objectives of the Lions Club, including providing assistance during natural disasters, protecting the environment, promoting good citizenship and supporting community welfare. He also expressed his interest in strengthening future collaborations with Nagaland University for the upliftment and welfare of society.

Lion Max Menuse-O, Secretary, Lions Club of Kohima, shared his personal experience from his early days as an NSS volunteer and encouraged students to channel their energy and enthusiasm towards meaningful and socially beneficial activities.
He emphasised the value of community service and urged the students to actively participate in initiatives that contribute to society and the environment.
The programme was chaired by Er Shanchamo Yanthan, NSS Programme Officer. Dr Rashmi, NSS Programme Officer, delivered the welcome address and highlighted the significance of the plantation drive and the role of students in environmental protection. Dr Ratan Kaurinta, NSS Programme Officer, delivered the vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to the Special Guest, Lions Club Kohima, university authorities, NSS volunteers and all participants for their support and active involvement.
Following the formal programme, the Special Guest, Lions Club representatives, NSS Programme Officers, volunteers and students participated in the tree plantation activity within the university campus. The initiative provided students with an opportunity to translate environmental awareness into direct community action.
