A coordination meeting on the implementation of the National Initiative for Proficiency in Reading with Understanding and Numeracy (NIPUN Bharat) Mission was held at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, Dimapur on October 12.

The Meeting was chaired and initiated by Dr. Diana Patton, ADC Dimapur. She thanked all the stakeholders for attending the meeting, and said NIPUN was launched by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, in July 2021. NIPUN Bharat aims to ensure universal Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) for every child by the end of Grade 3 by 2026–2027. The mission covers children aged three to nine years, from Balvatika to Grade 3, with a focus on developing essential reading, writing and numeracy skills during the foundational years of education.

A PowerPoint presentation highlighted the importance of Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN), Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE), and teacher training. It outlined Vidya Pravesh, a three-month play-based school preparation module developed by NCERT, which aims to ensure a smooth transition to Grade 1 through games, stories, songs and interactive activities.

The presentation also covered Vidya Samiksha Kendra (VSK), a technology-enabled platform for monitoring school, teacher and student data to identify learning gaps, track attendance and improve educational outcomes. Digitisation of Holistic Progress Cards and Academic Record Collection was also highlighted.

Key points discussed during the meeting were the inclusion of private schools in the programme, as it involves a policy decision, the matter will be compiled and taken up with the State Government. It was also discussed to formulate an evaluation plan at both the state and district levels. The district will develop a suitable plan based on its specific needs rather than relying entirely on the State Government’s framework. The involvement of NGOs associated with the education sector was also discussed to strengthen the implementation process.

The need to clearly define the roles and responsibilities of district-level stakeholders was highlighted, with further deliberations proposed for the next meeting.
