The second edition of Pangolin Cup 2026 was inaugurated at Meluri Local Ground on October 26, with the aim of promoting community participation in wildlife conservation, particularly the protection and preservation of pangolins.

The programme was organised by the Meluri Range Sports Association (MRSA) in collaboration with the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) and other partners.

Sathosie Nyuwi, President of MRSA, delivered the welcome address, while Chingrisoror Rumthao of WTI introduced Pangolin Cup 2026, highlighting its significance in promoting awareness and community-led conservation efforts.

Addressing the gathering, ADC Meluri, Shelly Katiry, NCS, emphasised the importance of maintaining ecological balance and protecting wildlife. He stated that the Pangolin Cup should serve as a platform to promote environmental awareness alongside sports and expressed appreciation to the organising committee for bringing the initiative to Meluri District.

SDPO Meluri, Dr T Desela Sangtam, NPS, observed that the tournament was more than just a football competition, as it brought people together through teamwork and collective efforts towards wildlife conservation, particularly pangolin protection. She urged the players to uphold discipline, respect one another and participate in the true spirit of sportsmanship rather than focusing solely on winning.

Drawing a parallel between football and conservation, he emphasised teamwork, discipline and shared responsibility, urging everyone to ensure that pangolins do not become merely a story of the past, but are protected and preserved for future generations.

The keynote address was delivered by Sunil Kyarong, Joint Director, WTI, on the theme “Communities as Partners in Conservation,” underscoring the importance of involving local communities in safeguarding wildlife and preserving the natural environment.

Sierhosie Kajiri, General Secretary, Pochury Hoho, spoke on “Reflections and Way Forward on Community Conservation Resolutions,” highlighting the importance of community commitments and collective action in strengthening conservation efforts.

The programme was highlighted by a traditional cultural performance by the Meluri Area Public Organisation (MAPO) and a special musical performance by Lingling. Rev. Muluote Nyuwi, Pastor of Meluri Village Baptist Church, invoked God’s blessings, while Monesh Tomar of WTI delivered the vote of thanks.
