The Union Cabinet has reportedly approved an additional two-year engagement period for the 75% of Agniveers who are not selected for regular service after their initial four-year tenure, creating a further pathway for their possible absorption into the Defence Forces.
According to a PIB release on the Agnipath Scheme, the decision was taken on the recommendations of the Indian Defence Forces following an assessment of organisational requirements, operational efficiency and the performance of Agniveers.
Under the revised arrangement, 25% of Agniveers will continue to be offered regular employment in the Defence Forces on the basis of merit, as envisaged under the scheme. The remaining 75% will be eligible for the additional two-year engagement period, subject to their willingness.
After completing the extended engagement, all Agniveers will be offered enrolment as regular soldiers, subject to their willingness and fulfilment of the prescribed selection criteria.
The statement said the additional engagement period followed a detailed evaluation and feedback process aimed at balancing the aspirations of Agniveers with the operational requirements of the armed forces. The second engagement period will carry higher remuneration, an enhanced Seva Nidhi package and seniority benefits.

Highlighting the achievements of the Agnipath Scheme after four years of implementation, the statement cited wider recruitment coverage across districts, a more standardised and transparent recruitment process, and high levels of physical fitness, morale, motivation, competitive spirit and discipline among Agniveers.
It also noted improvements in skills, technological adaptability and education during service, besides opening up various branches of the Defence Forces to women.
Based on the assessment of the scheme and the performance of Agniveers, the government has decided to continue the Agnipath Scheme, the statement said.
