The 49th inter ward Christmas cake race cum declaration of Best Maintained Ward 2022 organised by the Mokokchung Municipal Council was held today at Town Square (Police Point), Mokokchung.
Shashank Pratap Singh, IAS, DC in his Christmas greetings appreciated the ADC & Administrator, MMC for organising such an event in the district.
He said the Mokokchung town Christmas cake race was a unique programme and is not seen in the other towns of the state.
He said through this initiative one could develop stake holdership. Mokokchung town comprises of 18 wards and the DC stressed that all the wards should have close coordination among themselves and the MMC for better functioning of the town and achieve the main objective of MMC – to make the town cleaner and work towards sanitation.
He also stressed on the loose habit of solid wastes management and encouraged the public to practice the 3Rs – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle which he said were the magic words to keep the town clean.
The DC also assured that his office would help wherever it was needed.
The race was flagged off by the Deputy Commissioner. Owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event was held after a gap of two years.
The MMC organises this annual competition where both men and women from all of the 18 wards under the municipality compete in the Christmas Cake Race. The race started from the town square point which stretches along the heart of the town’s main roads and culminates at the starting point.
All together eleven runners participated. The runners included two women and nine men each from all the 18 wards.

Lijaba Lijen ward (ward 18) was adjudged the winner for the 5th consecutive year completing the race in 11 minutes and 58 seconds. Dilong Ward (Ward 06) finished at 12 minutes 3 seconds, only five seconds away from the winning team. Sangtemla ward (Ward 11) came in at the third place completing the race in 12 minutes and 18 seconds.

The event also witnessed the declaration and presentation of the Best Maintained ward Award 2022 where Aongza ward was adjudged the winner for the 6th year in a row while Salangtem ward and Lijaba Lijen ward were declared the second and third place winners respectively.
The MMC also presented the Best Sanitation Worker award to Masasola (Best Sweeper) and Bendangsashi (Best Labourer) for the year 2022.
Lijaba Lijen ward was established only 14 years but has won the race 11 times and consecutively for five years and twice as 1st runner up.
