Stressing on the importance of Mental Health, Anupam Talwar Kohli, a Rogerian psychotherapist lamented that there are only handful of people who have mental health literacy and said most people are illiterates on the issue. She pointed that mental health is equally important as physical health and urged the graduating students to understand the role, identify and spot the rips of the people and guide them to the right person.
“You actually have a greater and more significant role than me in the society to spread awareness,” Kohli said.
She also encouraged the students of CRIMHSC to make use of the acquired knowledge and said that they were the legitimate mental health practitioners and when it comes to helping people in the capacity of mental health, they were way more qualified. She added that just because someone has a degree in psychology does not mean they have the skills because someone has a degree in biology, they cannot practice but this is the sort of the confusion that happens across the world.
Furthermore, Kohli noted that the way in which the world functions today and urged the students to invest timely on mental health by having confidence in the knowledge and skills they are equipped with.
She urged the graduating students of CRIMHSC to raise questions about mental hygiene and to be in the front in educating and identifying the people who needs help.
Kohli said psychotherapist is an opportunity and a profession that nourishes the soul like no other and assured the students “the sense of accomplishment, the sense of purpose that you feel when you are genuinely able to help another human is priceless”.
