The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) has urged people of the State to exercise caution in the coming days as Cyclone Mocha makes its way northwards in the Bay of Bengal.
NSDMA has informed that the Nagaland will not be “directly affected” by the cyclonic storm, however ‘there will be frequent strong winds and isolated rain showers in the next few days.’ It has also stated that the state will experience “heavy rains” on 13 May 2023 (Saturday) and “very heavy rains” on 14 May (Sunday). Thunderstorms with lightning are also expected, it added.
The authority further warned that Cyclone Mocha could cause – damages to unsecured structures, kutcha houses, standing crops; landslide in vulnerable areas; uproot trees and break branches. In this regard, NSDMA has requested the public “not to shelter under large trees and near the river banks to prevent unnecessary risk to life from lightning and flash flood.”

The Cyclonic Storm “MOCHA” pronounced as “MOKHA” lay centred near latitude 11.6°N and longitude 88.1°E, about 510 km west of Port Blair, 1160 km south-southwest of Cox’ Bazaar (Bangladesh), and 1120 km south-southwest of Sittwe (Myanmar).
On May 12, 2023, at morning, the storm is predicted to intensify into a very severe cyclonic storm over the central Bay of Bengal. Thereafter, it is likely to recurve gradually and move north-northeastwards with further intensification which would eventually reach its peak intensity.
After that, on May 14, 2023, it will pass over the coasts of southeast Bangladesh and northern Myanmar between Cox’s Bazar (Bangladesh) and Kyaukpyu (Myanmar) sometime in the afternoon as a very severe cyclonic storm with a wind speed of 150-160 kmph gusting to 175 kmph.
On May 14, 2023, Cyclone “MOCHA” is predicted to make landfall in the Bangladesh-Myanmar coastline region, affecting south Bengal. The forecast, though, could change during the next few days.
