In a shocking incident that has sent shockwaves across the nation, the apex women body of the Ao Naga Tribe, Watsu Mungdang, has unequivocally condemned the heinous act of violence that occurred on 4th May 2023 in Manipur. A horrifying and outrageous video emerged from the region, depicting a large mob parading and sexually assaulting two Kuki-Zo women.
The incident took place amidst an ongoing wave of ethnic violence in Manipur that has persisted for the past two months, resulting in the loss of hundreds of lives and the displacement of thousands. Despite the prolonged period of unrest, authorities’ response had been lackluster until the disturbing visuals of the assault surfaced, prompting a national outcry.
In a press release, the Watsü Mungdang expressed its deep concern and anguish over the inhumane act, stating that words fail to adequately describe the level of brutality these innocent women were subjected to. The incident has shed light on the failure of power holders, star anchors, and TV media, who seemingly neglected to bring the issue to the forefront earlier.
Calling for immediate action, the Apex women body urged both the Central Government and the Manipur Government to take immediate cognizance of the offense and ensure that all necessary measures are taken to bring the perpetrators to justice. Additionally, they appealed to the National Commission for Women to intervene and support the victims in their pursuit of justice and healing.
