Padmanabha Balakrishna (PB) Acharya, an Indian Politician and former Governor of Nagaland passed away today. It has been reported that Acharya, 92, passed away this morning at his residence in Mumbai at 5.30 AM after suffering from ailments related to old age. The funeral is said to be held at 5.30 PM in Mumbai (Maharashtra).
Acharya served as Nagaland’s Governor from was July 2014 to July 2019.
The news of Acharya passing was first announced on X by Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi. “Deeply saddened at passing away of Shri P B Acharya, former Governor Nagaland. His simplicity in life and total dedication to the good of the Nation will ever inspire us. My condolences to the family. May his soul rests with the divine. Om Shanti!- Governor Ravi,” posted the TN Governor on X.

Acharya held several positions in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) before being assigned as Governor. He also served as the Governor of Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, and Tripura. Between 1995 and 2001, Acharya served as National Secretary of the BJP during Narendra Modi’s tenure as the national general secretary of the Party.
During his tenure as Governor of Nagaland, Acharya advocated for preservation of indigenous traditions especially focusing on safeguarding of indigenous languages. His Governorship also initiated various academic exchange between Nagaland and various states in the country.
He is also well known for opening the gates of Raj Bhavan Kohima for interaction with mediapersons, as well as the public and was known as one of the most accessible Governors in Nagaland. His lady wife also volunteered as a teacher in a Government school in Kohima during his term as Governor.
