The 55th Sports Meet of the Kezoma Village Students’ Union in Kohima was held on December 28.
Zhopovi Zecho, the District Sports Officer (DSO) for Kohima and Tseminyu district, Department of Youth Resources and Sports, Government of Nagaland, highlighted the government’s strong focus on sports development. He emphasized that the state government is enhancing sporting infrastructure and providing numerous opportunities for athletes, including training, coaching, and career support.
Zecho highlighted the various initiatives undertaken by the government to support sports enthusiasts and individuals excelling in different sporting disciplines. Additionally, he emphasized the potential for building a successful career through sports for those who are dedicated to the discipline. The speaker also updated on the extensive range of employment opportunities available in both the government and private sectors, noting that there is a 3 percent job reservation in the government sector for individuals excelling in sports. Additionally, he emphasized the development of sporting infrastructure and the establishment of various sports academies across all districts of the state under the Khelo India mission to train Naga youths in different games and sports.
Encouraging students, particularly those from Kezoma Village, to seize the opportunities provided by the government, the sports officer urged them to take advantage of these initiatives. Furthermore, he announced that the Department of Youth Resources and Sports will conduct selection trials for admission into the state sports hostel for the 2024 sessions, preferably for individuals under 14 years of age. The trials will take place at the Indira Gandhi Stadium and will include disciplines such as sepaktakraw for girls, athletics for girls, and football for boys, scheduled from January 18-20.

In this regard, Zecho invited individuals to come to the location on the specified day and join in the activities or seek more information from the district sports office in Kohima.
Previously, Rokovito Kisotso, Secretary of Games and Sports, presided over the program, and Kevipodi Tase, Assistant Secretary of Games and Sports, oversaw the oath-taking ceremony.
Throughout the day-long event, various games and sports were played, including men’s football, women’s penalty shootout, volleyball for both men and women, open category standing broad jump, tug of war, and other games.
