For the fifth time, 27 years old Naga Wrestler Venuzo Dawhuo lifted the Champion Title of the 30th biennial Chokri Area Wrestling Association (CAWA) on January 18. The CAWA championship was held at Chetheba Town, Phek.
Weighing 105 kg with a height of 5.10 ft, Dawhuo, son of Nezohu Dawhuo, hails from Thenyizu village. The winner was awarded with a cash prize of Rs 1,00,000.
24 years old Vemele Thingo, son of Dikhamu Thingo secured the second position. With a weight 100 Kg, Thingo hails from Thipuzu village and was awarded a cash prize of Rs 80,000.
The third position was secured by 22 years old Cusavoyi Chuzho (72 kg) from Chetheba town. Chuzho is the son of Lt Melusato Chuzho. He was awarded Rs 70,000. Meanwhile, 23 years old Medozho Kapuh (80kg), son of Neswuyi Kapuhfrom, from Thenyizu village won the fourth position and received a cash prize of Rs 60,000.
Ngosa Tunyi from Kikruma village stood first in the Under-16 category. Mutsezo Puro from Kikruma village secured the second position, while Khruzo Tetseo from Khulazu Basa and Nungoto Nakro from Thenyizu village stood third and fourth respectively.
Kudecho Khamo, Advisor for CAWD and Taxes, Government of Nagaland, graced the occasion as the Special Guest. In his speech, Khamo stated that the narrative of sports have transitioned over the years from entertainment to that of a profession gaining prominence with greater scope. He exhorted the players to be honest, keep a good character and trained well with hard work.
Calling on the society to place importance to sport, Khamo mentioned that the discipline has been generating employment and income as it gradually transform into a popular human activity in the world. The need to build a harmonious society with a vision was also underscored by the Special Guest, in order to collectively build a progressive society.

Kuhupoyo Puro, Former Vice-President, Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) who was the Guest Speaker stressed on the need for Sportspersons to head sports associations to promote sports.
Delivering the presidential address, Vezhoduyi Thisa called upon the Chokri area people to rethink and refocus while also acknowledging God for all laurels and achievement. Thisa also encouraged the wrestlers to promote belt wrestling as it will become an international sport and will be included as an Olympic discipline. Excelling in this discipline will also enable a sport to play better even in Naga-style wrestling, said Thisa.
The programme was led by Ciekrotso Chuzho, General Secretary CAWA with an invocation prayer by Rev Vesupra Testseo, Pastor, CTBC. A folk song was presented by Chakhesang Culture Research Institute, Chetheba while the oath was administered by Thepukhoyi Swuro, Technical Secretary CAWA.
Meanwhile a new team of CAWA headed by Hukupa Ciekhan for the tenure 2024-26 was also selected.
