Chief Minister of Nagaland Neiphiu Rio on Tuesday announced that the Kohima Press Club (KPC) office building construction in the state capital will be completed within one year. Rio made this statement during a press conference on February 27, following the budget session of the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly.
Alice Yhoshü, President Kohima Press Club (KPC) expressed appreciation to the Chief Minister for the assurance of construction of a permanent Press Club building at the state government-allotted site in New Secretariat area within one year.
Despite being the oldest Press Club in Nagaland, that too, based in the State Capital, Yhoshü noted that the KPC, at 23, still does not have a permanent or even a temporarily-allotted government building for journalists to congregate and exchange ideas, dialogues, conduct press conferences, and to carry out various day to day professional activities.

“Time and again, we have drawn the attention of successive governments on this matter, especially in the comparative context that our counterparts in the neighbouring state capitals have all been bestowed with various logistics support and other beneficial assistances by their respective state governments,” maintained Yhoshü.
The Chief minister’s announcement is a reflection that the government of the day acknowledges the pivotal and indispensable role of the Fourth Estate in a democracy, added the KPC President.
The president further expressed that the KPC looks forward on the trust and commitment of the state government in making the new Press Club building into a vibrant Media Centre in the State Capital with facilities to even cater to visiting journalists from other districts and states.
