The AVL 437 DUO Vehicle Emission Checking Machine- capable of checking both diesel and petrol variant vehicles- was launched today in Kohima.

In a brief programme held at the SP Office, Kohima today, the Superintendent of Police, Kohima Bharat Laxman Markad, IPS formally launched the machine. He also flagged off three traffic patrol motorcycles for enforcement purposes.

According to a press release by PRO Kohima Police, the machine and the enforcement vehicles are funded under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP). The SP Kohima in his address emphasized on the need to curb activities that harms the environment. Vehicle emission being one of the major causes of environmental pollution in the district, he stressed that police now has the capability to check and enforce vehicle emission norms.

Markad encouraged the enforcement teams to be dedicated and sincere in carrying out their assigned duties. The programme was led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (Traffic), Kohima and the dedicatory prayer was pronounced by Associate Pastor, PUBC, Kohima.

During the programme, it was announced that random checking of suspected vehicles plying below the emission norms will be carried out. The release further added that penalty for driving vehicle violating road safety, noise/air pollution standards is an offence U/S. 190 (2) MV Act punishable for the first offence with imprisonment upto three months and/or fine and disqualification for holding license for three months while the second offence is punishable with imprisonment upto six months and/or fine.
