Mokokchung Athletics celebrated Kids’ Athletics Day on Tuesday, joining the “World Mile Challenge” events at Imkongmeren Sports Complex, in the presence of District Sports Officer Anguvito Sumi.
A total of 103 children participated in the World Kids’ Athletics Day from various schools in Mokokchung district. The race was the only event for this year’s inaugural session, which had a total of four categories: Category (30 meters) for 4-7 years, both boys and girls; Category (50 meters) for 8-11 years, both girls and boys; Category (80 meters) for 12-14 years, both boys and girls; Category (200 meters) for 4-7 years, 8-11 years, and 12-14 years, for both boys and girls.
Lensar Molo Jamir (Male) and Imsuren Longchar (Female) were awarded the title of Youngest Promising Athletes 2024.
Rongsentoshi, President of Mokokchung Athletics, stated that it is the first of its kind in Mokokchung district. He informed that Mokokchung Athletics organized this tournament when it became the youngest formed Association in the district in the year 2022, with the objective of encouraging young athletes from the grassroots level to represent not only at the national but also in the international arena.
He emphasized that athletics, starting from the grassroots level, has the potential for high achievement if talent is nurtured from scratch.

The president of Mokokchung Athletics was pleased with the turnout of the children accompanied by their parents right after their regular classes and stated that the responses were very positive. He mentioned that they are planning to make it a yearly event from now on, while coaching camps will be organized during summer and winter vacations.
Rongsentoshi encouraged parents and children to avail themselves of the opportunity, ensuring that various measures will be taken to not disrupt the children’s regular classes. He also informed that more sports athletic events will be introduced in the next sessions and coaching camps.
Dr. Lanu, one of the sponsors of the event, delivered the dedicatory prayer and, in his address, acknowledged the parents for supporting their children’s participation in the event. He urged more parents to support their children in the field of sports. Addressing the gathered children, he said, “Believe in your dreams. A dream is not yet a reality, but dreams can come true, so dream big and work hard to achieve it.”
He encouraged the children to give their best efforts to become good sportspeople, expressing hope that some of them would one day reach the Olympics and represent the state. Dr. Lanu also commended the Mokokchung Athletics for organizing the Athletics day and expressed optimism for further developments in the near future.
