The Dimapur Naga Students’ Union has strongly opposed the proposed candidature of non-locals as Government nominees in the Dimapur Municipal Council. While reminding of the nomination system as enshrined in the Nagaland Municipal Act 2023, the DNSU stated that it believes there are “adequate locals with specific knowledge and experiences in the working mechanisms of Dimapur Municipal Council” who would qualify to be government nominees.

Reaffirming the stand of the Naga Students’ Federation, the DNSU stressed that it is crucial for the State Government “to understand that Article 371(A) is not a mere decorative clause but a right granted to the Nagas to govern, decide, and protect the well-being of their people.” Any legislative or administrative actions should always consider the significance of Article 371(A) enshrined in the Constitution, it added.

Stating its strong objection, the Union said, “the Dimapur Naga Students’ Union with all our Tribal Units will staunchly oppose the inclusion of non-Nagas in the Dimapur Municipal Council through nominations and will take all necessary measures to prevent this.”
