The 13th edition of the Luke Sasong Memorial Volleyball Trophy 2024, themed “Unity through Sports,” commenced on 21st August 2024 at the Multi-purpose Sports Complex in Mokokchung. The tournament was graced by Imtipokyim, President of the Mokokchung District Volleyball Association, who served as the Guest of Honour.

In his address, Imtipokyim highlighted the significance of the Luke Sasong Sporting Association, an active organization affiliated with the Mokokchung District Volleyball Association (MDVA). He expressed delight in seeing the Association, under the aegis of the Mangmetong Students’ Union, embracing volleyball and nurturing many talented young players.

Imtipokyim paid tribute to Sasongsangba, known as Luke Sasong, describing him as a valedictorian scholar, a pioneer in Naga student leadership, a freedom fighter against the British, and a dedicated leader in Christian services among the Ao and Naga communities. “As we commemorate this tournament in honor of Luke Sasong, may we celebrate the talents and achievements of our players,” he said.

The Guest of Honour also expressed his happiness at witnessing the gathering of many young, talented players eager to compete in volleyball. “As you enter the court, may your skills and teamwork shine, and may you demonstrate true sportsmanship and athletic excellence throughout this tournament,” he encouraged the participants.

Imtipokyim also took the opportunity to congratulate the organizers for their tireless efforts in making the event possible. He called on everyone to come together to create unforgettable moments and foster a spirit of unity through this tournament.

Lanutoba, President of Mangmetong Senso Telongjem Mokokchung, in his brief speech, emphasized the importance of maintaining discipline and good manners throughout the tournament. He reminded the players that their conduct on and off the court would not only impact their own lives but also leave a lasting impression on the audience. “Keep it positive,” he urged, highlighting the importance of sportsmanship and a positive attitude during the competition.

Tinuyangba, President of the Mangmetong Students’ Union, delivered the welcome address, while Yutensangla Imchen chaired the program. The opening ceremony included an invocation by Tiaakum APY from Sungkomen Baptist Church, a special number by Sentilong Tzudir, and the Oath Taking Ceremony led by the Convener of the Technical Committee.

MH-10 Kohima, the defending champions of the Luke Sasong Memorial Volleyball Trophy, reaffirmed their supremacy in the tournament with a commanding victory in the opening match of the 13th edition. The champions, who clinched the title in 2022 after a thrilling final against arch-rivals Changtongya Volleyball Association (CVA), once again faced their familiar foes in a highly anticipated rematch.

From the outset, MH-10 Kohima displayed their championship pedigree, sweeping CVA in two straight sets in the best-of-three format. The first set was fiercely contested, with CVA pushing MH-10 to their limits. However, the defending champions held their nerve, edging out a 25-21 victory in a closely fought battle.

The second set saw MH-10 Kohima shift into a higher gear, as they took control of the game early on. They raced ahead with a dominant 10-1 lead, putting immense pressure on CVA. Despite a valiant comeback attempt in the latter stages of the set, where CVA narrowed the gap to 28-26, it wasn’t enough to overturn MH-10’s lead. The defending champions sealed the set and the match, leaving CVA to regroup after a hard-fought but ultimately unsuccessful challenge.
