The Zeliang Students’ Union (ZLSU) has announced the initiation of indefinite agitation in demand for the retention or replacement of math and science teachers that have been badly affected the schools by the recent rationalization.

The first phase of agitation started on October 9 which included the closure of educational offices however the second phase will include closure of all the government-established schools and educational offices under Peren District. “The agitation will continue unless the pressing demands for the retention or replacement of teachers are satisfactorily addressed by the concerned department,” stated the Union.

Some of the best performing government schools in the Peren district has reportedly being affected due to the recent rationalization exercise carried out by the Department of School Education (DOSE) which involved transferring of teachers without replacement in the middle of the academic sessions.

“It is an academic cruelty and an outright violation of our fundamental right of right to education. It also literally means a ‘zero concern’ of the department for the quality of education of children,” expressed ZLSU.

To resolve the ongoing issue, the union asserted that it had exhausted all avenues for constructive dialogue including the extension of 15 days ultimatum to 30 days that was served on September 9 for retention or replacement of science and math teachers of some schools- GMS Nkialwa, GMS Mpai, GHS Mbaulwa, GMS Pungiwa, GHSS Tening.

“If our demands are not met the union will be left with no choice but to proceed to the second phase of agitation. This is not a decision the union considers lightly but is our commitment to ensuring a brighter future for every student as they duly deserve,” stated the ZLSU.

It also apprised that the planned closure will pose significant implications for students, educators, and the larger community. During the proposed shutdown, it reminded that students will not have access to their usual educational environment, leading to disruptions in learning and academic progress.

“The Union strongly believes that this action is necessary to compel the authorities to take immediate and decisive action concerning the educational system in our district. The union also would like to call on all stakeholders-students, parents, educators, and community leaders to unite together in support of this initiative. The union requires community engagement to emphasize the importance of quality education and the urgent need for effective teachers who can inspire and nurture students’ potential. We hope our bold stance will resonate and lead to meaningful changes that the educational system in Peren district desperately needs,” it further added.

The union has appealed the DoSE to reconsider its adamant stance for the sake of the welfare of the students’ community because “students in government schools have the equal right to quality education as those in private schools”.

Resolute in its commitment to ensuring the rights of members and the students it serve, the Union has urged the authorities to heed its demands and take immediate action.

“If our demands remain unmet, we are prepared to escalate our protest to any extent necessary, and the concerned department will be held responsible for any untoward incident that may occur,” cautioned the Union.
