Langpangkongtsür Telongjem Mokokchung Town holds one day seminar

A one day seminar of Langpangkongtsür Telongjem Mokokchung Town on the theme “The responsibility of women in social development” and “Women’s role in preserving the environment”was held on October 11. Resource person, I Tangitla Pongen, Technical Officer KVK Mokokchung urged women to be wise and poised, highlighting the need for self-reliant, honest, dedicated and hardworking women to transform society.

Delving on the rich cultural heritage of the Aos where every woman must understand their responsibility in order to keep the tribal culture and tradition alive for Posterity, Pongen said that every women must work for the preservation of one’s mother tongue, must teach our children the importance of the exogamous marriage system in our society, systematic clan system, attires and dressings.

“Every woman must be a role model, and a resourceful person to lead our society into new heights of prosperity and development,” stated Pongen.

Speaking on the topic, “Women’s role in preserving the environment”, Resource person Sashikokla Jamir, Asst Professor, FAC stated, “Women view the environment as the life support system of humanity and the source of all life, that people are dependent on”.

According to her, women play multiple roles in the family, community, and in the protection and management of natural resources. Women’s roles are directly affected by the state of the environment because women are the main users of resources like water, forest resources and other land resources. In general, women have better awareness than men of the need to protect the environment for all humans.

Jamir said that as Christians we must protect our environment for our present and our future based on biblical teachings. She illustrated the works of women who have contributed for environmental protection in the national and international arena.

She also dwelled on the subject of waste management, rain water harvesting, reducing waste, reusing and recycling, saying no to plastic, educating girls and empowering women.

The seminar started with a key note address from the president, Langpangkongtsür Telongjem Mokokchung Town and concluded with vote of thanks from I Alemla Jamir. The program highlighted special number from Salulamang Telongjem and Chuchuyimlang Watsü Telongjem Mokokchung. The program was chaired by Nungsanglemla and B Asangla.
