The Congress led INDIA bloc has presented a no-confidence notice against Rajya Sabha Chairman and Vice President of India, Jagdeep Dhankhar, accusing him of being biased against Opposition parties and acting as a ‘shield’ for the ruling party. This is the first time since 1952 that a no ‘Resolution for removal of Vice President’ has been brought against any Vice President under Article 67 of the Constitution.
Addressing a press conference on 11 December 2024, Congress President and Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha said that they have taken the step “very thoughtfully and under compulsion with the intention of saving the country’s constitution and democracy” and asserted that there is no personal enmity or political animosity with Dhankhar.
The Opposition alleged that over the past three years, instead of allowing members to raise critical issues, the Chairman has resorted to reprimanding senior Opposition leaders. “The conduct of the Chairman has caused great damage to the dignity of the country,” Kharge stated.
Further, the Congress chief said that the Chairman schools the members in the House like a headmaster, giving sermons. he claimed that the Speaker prevents Opposition MPs from speaking in the House, “working as the government spokesperson for his next promotion”. Kharge also alleged that “The biggest disruptor in Rajya Sabha is the Chairman himself”.
