The Southern Angami Students Union is celebrating their 75th Anniversary under the theme “Igniting Excellence” at Multi-Purpose Hall, Tewetso-ozwii Sweba, Viswema Village, Kohima district. Viswema Students’ Union is hosting the three-day event which started on 8th January will culminate on 10th January.
Earlier on 8th January, Kevithuto Sophie, IPS, Commissioner of Police, Dimapur, graced the introductory session and also unfurled the SASU Flag while the introductory session invitee was the Southern Angami Sports Association.
On 9th January, Temjen Imna Along, Minister of Higher Education & Tourism, Nagaland, unveiled the SASU 75th anniversary monolith at Multi-Purpose Hall, Tewetso-ozwii Sweba, Viswema Village. The Minister attended the inaugural session as the Special Guest and also released the souvenir.
In his address, Along remarked that the people of Southern Angami region have rightly placed themselves in these 75 long years and that it was a very commendable day for the people of the region. He also lauded the initiatives of SASU in respecting and remembering the leaders of the past.
The Minister extended gratitude to the elders and people of the region for allowing educational institutions to grow in their region. Highlighting that several students from his own constituency study in the region, he noted that the leaders of Southern Angami region have been kind to the people of Nagaland.
Further, Temjen Imna Along underscored education as the backbone of the society and emphasised the need for education to evolve and upgrade. The Minister also urged the people of Southern Angami region to build a strong and resilient future and requested the elders and leaders present at the event to make a cohesive plan and sponsor the best student from their village for good coaching centres and support them in their studies.

Earlier in the session, Letso Mekro, President SASU, in his presidential address, stated that the day was not just about the executives or committees or people present but the momentous occasion is celebrated because of past leaders and their visions. SASU has been through some difficult tenures, some pro active and some innovative as well but we are celebrating this 75th Anniversary because of our leaders, Mekro said.
While pointing out the beautiful natural landscape the Southern Angami region is blessed with, the SASU President also highlighted concerns related to its conservation. He declared that amid the pursue of knowledge for opportunities and livelihood, the student community and younger generations have initiated a pledge to “Preserve, Reserve and Conserve Kezoltsa and the Dzükou” for the future generations to breathe clean air and fresh water. He urged the student community to be prudent and wise as they make this pledge.
Further, using the platform, Mekro highlighted the prospects for the development of Eco Tourism and Institutions in Southern Angami Region, and forwarded a proposal to Minister Imna Along to construct an Amenity Centre for Southern Angami and also for the tourists to enjoy during their stay in their Region.
The opening remarks at the inaugural session was given by Shürhovol Naleo, Convenor, Organizing Committee while greetings was delivered by Khriesamhalie David Mere, President Angami Students’ Union. Er Tepul Hopovi President SAPO also exhorted the gathering while the Anniversary Choir was Khuzama Students’ Care Union.
