The Seyochung Village Students’ Union (SVSU) has urged the immediate intervention of the Assistant Labour Officer, Kiphire, to address the poor working conditions of the labourers working at the ongoing metalling road project between Sitimi and Seyochung HQ.
In a letter to the officer, the organisation stated that it visited the site on March 17, 2025, and was dismayed to witness the “distressing conditions in which the labourers are forced to work visited the site”.
SVYO highlighted the following:
“Lack of Basic Facilities and Welfare Measures: The labourers are working without access to basic facilities such as safe drinking water, sanitation, and adequate shelter. The absence of these essential standards creates an unsafe and unhealthy living and working environment.
Deficient Safety and Health Measures: The site lacks proper safety protocols, leaving the labourers vulnerable to potential hazards. Additionally, the working environment is extremely dusty, posing serious health risks, especially respiratory issues, due to prolonged exposure without appropriate protective equipment.”
The student body suggested that the Labour Officer conduct a thorough inspection of the project site and ensure that basic facilities such as safe drinking water, sanitation, and shelter are provided to meet acceptable living standards. “Implement robust safety protocols and health measures to protect the labourers, including effective dust control and provision of personal protective equipment”, it added.
SVSU President Longtili C Sangtam and General Secretary Tsise also stated that the “prompt action will not only ensure compliance with labour laws but also safeguard the health, dignity, and safety of the workers involved in this vital infrastructure project”.
