The Jail Visit Committee set up by the State Government in connection with WP(C) Suo Moto 8/2018 visited the Central Jail, Dimapur, to assess the conditions and review ongoing legal aid services for inmates.
The committee comprised Neiko Akami, Member Secretary of the Nagaland State Legal Services Authority (NSLSA), K Hamtok Phom, Director General of Prisons, and Solezhol Neikha, Superintendent of Jail. During the visit, the team noted that the jail currently houses 190 inmates and recommended the installation of a proper and planned drainage system to ensure effective water management in all seasons.
Following the inspection, the Member Secretary of NSLSA, along with the Principal District & Sessions Judge-cum-Chairman of DLSA Dimapur and panel lawyers, reviewed the status of legal aid provided by NSLSA to convicted persons for appeals in the High Court. As part of the initiative, four more convicted prisoners were granted legal aid to file appeals before the High Court.

During an interaction with the inmates, six convicts requested legal assistance, stating that their poor financial conditions made it impossible for them to hire private lawyers. The committee assured that their cases would be examined for necessary legal support.
