Kohima DLSA organizes free Aadhaar registration drive

The Kohima District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) launched a two-day  Special Aadhaar Registration Drive under National Legal Services Authority (SAATHI) Identity and Dignity campaign, which was  inaugurated by Neiko Akami, Member Secretary of the Nagaland State Legal Services Authority today.

In his inaugural speech, he shed light on the SAATHI campaign (Identity and Dignity), an initiative by the National Legal Services Authority. He emphasised that the campaign, was launched by National Legal Services Authority and it aims to provide legal identities, such as Aadhaar cards, to destitute children.

He explained that SAATHI means Survey for Aadhaar and Access to Tracking Holistic Inclusion and this aims that no citizens of India is left behind. He also stated that under this campaign destitute children are those children under the age of 18 who are without family support, guardianship, or a stable source of shelter, protection and care including children living on streets, in slums, or railway stations Orphans living/not living in child care institutions, abandoned children or those rescued from trafficking, begging, child labour Children residing in informal shelters or unregistered child care homes Missing children recovered and not restored to family.

This campaign has placed the responsibilities to legal services authority to survey & identification, mapping destitute children in streets, care homes, shelter homes, orphanages, child care institutions, ASHA and Anganwadi Workers and transit points.

He encouraged the Kohima DLSA to cover Tseminyu as well and enable the most needed persons to benefit free of cost from this campaign. He mentioned that this special drive was initiated for the public welfare since during the Mega Legal camp held by the Nagaland State Legal Services Authority in the month of April 2025 it received an overwhelming response from the public for Aadhar Registration.

Deputy Commissioner Kohima, B Henok Buchem also addressed the gathering, underscoring the importance of Aadhaar cards in availing government benefits, such as the CHIMS scheme. He urged the attendees to take advantage of this free registration drive and also stated the importance of Aadhaar Card updation which many people failed to do on time and for which it hindered many to avail government schemes benefits.

He also urged the KDLSA to also carry out legal awareness programmes in not only making the people know about their rights but more importantly on their duties and responsibilities as a citizen. Welcome speech was delivered by Mezivolu T Therieh, Principal District and Sessions Judge, and Chairperson of Kohima DLSA who also highlighted on the constitutional validity of Aadhaar and its importance. She further encouraged the public to avail this opportunity for Aadhaar registration and updation.

The program was chaired by Nagali Shohe Panel Lawyer Kohima DLSA. Around 260 beneficiaries availed the benefits on day 1.
