In a suspected case of murder, a 22-year-old woman was found dead near her residence in a locality in Kohima on October 25. Sources said the victim belonged to Jakhama village under Kohima district body was found hidden behind a ring-well covered by a sack, clothes and some firewood.
Kohima police said to have arrived and sent the dead body for post mortem. After completion of formalities, the body was handed over to the family and a funeral service was held on Sunday afternoon at the family’s private residence.
Calls made to the police went unanswered.
Meanwhile, the Jakhama Village Council (JVC) has condemned the alleged murder of its member. In a statement, the JVC termed it a senseless act of violence, which left the family and the whole community in utter shock and disbelief.
JVC mentioned that the victim was a brilliant student in college, a sports enthusiast with passion for basketball. “Her life was a promise of a beautiful future for the family and society, a promise that was cut short by a heinous crime that has shaken our faith in safety for women and justice,” the council stated.

Condemning the barbaric act, the JVC appealed to concerned authorities to expedite the investigation and ensure that the matter is taken up with utmost urgency and diligence in identifying and apprehending the perpetrator(s); ensure that investigation is done with transparency and prosecute the culprits) with the severest of punishment without any leniency; and take necessary and concrete steps to improve safety and security of all citizens, particularly women and children so that such acts are not repeated again.
The village council also appealed general public to assist the investigating agencies with any information, however insignificant it may seem, but desist from circulating any false information that deviates from the truth.
JVC asserted that it will not let the young woman’s death be in vain, and will not rest until justice is served.
The Southern Angami Youth Organisation (SAYO) has also expressed deep shock and dismay at the cold-blooded murder of one of its members.
While vehemently condemning the “inhuman and lawlessness” act of the perpetrators, SAYO urged the concerned authorities to expedite the investigation and take stringent action against the culprits and serve justice to the victim’s family.
Stating that such incidents have been frequently occurring around the state raising serious concerns for the safety of women, the SAYO called upon the state government and law enforcement authorities to adopt swift measures in preventing such acts from happening in future.
The organisation further appealed to the general public, civil organizations and right-thinking citizens for a unified call against such act of injustice and social disorder and to work together for a peaceful co-existence in the society.
SAYO also expressed its sincere condolences to the family and assured total support in their time of grief and loss.
In a separate statement, the Jakhama Youth Organisation (JYO) has vehemently condemned the “cold-blooded and barbaric murder” of one of its members, whose body was found near her residence in Kohima on October 25.
Stating that this act of cruelty has pierced the soul of the community and cries out for justice, the JYO demanded that the concerned authorities treat this case with the utmost urgency and bring the perpetrators to justice without delay.
